Karl-Heinz Haas

Dr. Karl-Heinz Haas, studied chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe up to his diploma thesis in 1980. He got his PhD at the same university in the field of physical chemistry and electrochemistry in 1983. After his PhD he joined Fraunhofer ISC in Würzburg, working in the field of hybrid polymers.

In 1988 he was employed by BASF as a R&D scientist and project leader at Central Polymer Research BASF AG, Ludwigshafen and Tsukuba/Japan (2,5 years)  dealing with hybrid polymers (nanoreinforcement of thermoplastics) and functional polymers for 3rd order nonlinear optics.

In 1995 he was assigned head of the hybrid polymer department at Fraunhofer ISC in Würzburg.  From 2002 until 2009 he was acting as deputy director at ISC. Since 2004 he is managing director of the Fraunhofer Nanotechnology Alliance (encompassing 17 Institutes) and responsible for business development in the field of materials chemistry at ISC. He is also head of IP management at ISC.

His research interests are nanoscaled hybrid inorganic-organic polymers and sol-gel-based inorganic materials as thin films, membranes, particles, fibers and composites including nanomaterials for construction and environment.

He was and is actively participating in European funded nanotechnology projects, worked as adviser for European project funding in nanotechnology, as expert and consultant for European and national projects and is lecturer in nanotechnology.

Title: “Nanotechnology markets and value chains – selected examples”

Abstract. In a first overview the actual markets for nanotechnologies and especially nanomaterials are briefly discussed. In order to be successful on the market the value-chains for nano products have to be considered very carefully. Examples for value-chains in various application fields will be presented. Also successful product developments/examples will be shown. The EU-funded project (Co-Pilot), which is supposed to help to close the gap for industrial implementation towards nanoparticles/nanocomposite availability, will briefly be presented as an example. A short outlook for possible future nano-enabled products is given.
